Style - The Clothes I Wear - Jake

Where do you call home?
I grew up in Valley Center CA, it is a small town in North County San Diego. I loved it, it was close to the city and the beach yet it still had the small town vibe. Great for raising crazy boys that love to be outside.

What's your sign?
Is it weird that I just had to look up my sign because I never have known what it is. Virgo I guess is what I am. Is that good or bad? Maybe I'll read up on it.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
I am studying Construction Management. So, the plan is work as a super for a few years than get my MBA and jump in with a bigger commercial contracting firm or do my own thing, we shall see.
Whose style do you admire?
I can't say I admire any one particular persons style I just pick and choose from lots of different people.

Where do you buy your jeans?
Macy's! Levi skinny jeans. Durable, comfy and best of all... cheap. I could never bring myself to drop a couple hundo on jeans.

What's the last text you received?
"Jake you are my very favorite"

Pablo Blaqk

You may know him as the guy that sings on one of The Vibrant Sound’s songs. Or maybe he helped you find that obscure album at Graywhale one time. Or possibly you saw him open for several well-known musicians at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Whatever the case may be, Pablo Blaqk is not someone you meet and forget.

Pablo’s wearing brown skinny jeans he got for $10 at Rue 21, $5 dress shoes he got a D.I., a pea coat, a white V-neck with pizza sauce stains on it and an olive green beanie when I met up with him at Juice ‘N Java in Provo to talk about his life, his music and his aspirations. And I must say, it was an interview I wouldn’t soon forget!
We start out talking about tigers and lions as pets but soon get down to business. Pablo’s parents are both Cuban and are both in the military. A self-proclaimed “army brat,” Pablo has lived in Miami, England, North Carolina and Orem, where he currently lives with his parents. He works with Rock the Mic Entertainment where he helps out with karaoke nights at Guru’s and Pirate Island. He also helps organize non-profit events in the area.

Pablo’s first album is due out late March, which he co-produced with musician Joshua James. The album will have a folk-inspired feel to it; however, you can’t pin Pablo down to one unique genre. He hopes to collaborate with many different artists from all genres and aims at progressing with each new album and getting more experimental as he goes along.

Pablo began playing guitar
when he was 18, after his dad wouldn’t let him get a shotgun. “I was so bored,” he told me. So he spent his $200 on a guitar, not a shotgun, and discovered an outlet to express himself. “Music changed my life,” he said. He’s also a painter and enjoys creating abstract pieces.Being himself in every situation is extremely important to Pablo, something that was very clear during our interview: He didn’t put up a front or tell me things that I wanted to hear; he said what he felt, and I feel like I know him incredibly well after only an hour in a coffee shop.

Pablo is one of the funniest and determined yet carefree people I have ever met. I left with a new perspective on the things I am facing and came away with a greater appreciation for life and living it to the fullest. He’s hilarious, but when it’s time for him to play his music or come on stage with The Vibrant Sound, he’s all business and puts on an incredible performance.

So there you have it, Pablo Blaqk in a nutshell. But believe me, there’s so much more to tell; and if you want to know more, I’m sure he’d love to sit down with you at a local coffee shop for an hour and talk about lions and tigers as pets.

Check out Pablo's music here.

Rob Bennion

It wasn't Rob Bennion's intention to end up playing jazz music, but after a stroke of natural talent provided him a year of jazz instruction with Ray Smith (Director of Synthesis at Brigham Young University), he finally started putting his own bands together in order to have the means to play. A few years and career changes later, Rob is now finally established as a jazz saxophone soloist and the leader of the Rob Bennion Jazz Band, which features some of the best musicians Salt Lake City has to offer.

"I have tried to quit [music] many times in my life, but I just can't drop it. As hard as I try and as much as I would like to get a real job, I can't do it," Bennion says. In fact, while in Japan for a teaching job, he ended up with a better-paying gig playing music at a local bar, while making friends and building a fanbase. He recently returned to Japan to tour and headline a jazz festival there. Within the last few weeks, Rob played at a fashion show held at the African American Club in New York City, where he had the entire club on their feet and involved in the show. "It was so validating for me, as a musician, really," said Bennion.

You can catch Bennion playing every so often downtown Salt Lake, with the Rob Bennion Jazz Band, on his own, or with a live drummer or deejay. Check out his music here.
THE SAME SEVEN QUESTIONS FOR ROB BENNION

Who or what inspires you?
I am so inspired by President Obama! He is the most inspirational person...He has really been bringing my faith back into the American dream. When I listen to what he said in the {State of the Union} speech, I don't really feel like it's just ideology. I feel as if he truly believes it and his whole life example is just that. I feel like I can make it as a small business owner, I can make it as a musician and do what I want to do, not what I feel like I need to, based on whatever societal pressure exists to go out and get that white collar job.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

One of my biggest strengths is also my biggest weakness, in that I am so determined and dedicated I often put on blinders and start neglecting my wife and the kids. But that's also the fire that pushes me to get things done...if I could somehow not be so obsessed with music that would make everyone around me a lot happier. What makes you happy?
I heard someone say that you need three things to be happy . . . something to do, someone to love, and something to hope for. I feel happy when I have hope for the future.

What is your greatest fear?
Failure. My greatest fear is that after asking for so much sacrifice from my wife and my family for so many years, that I don't actually make it.
What makes you laugh?
House. Hugh Laurie makes me laugh so hard, he is my favorite actor, I think. I wish I could be an actor on a show like that..and get away with it. I don't know why Wilson or anyone is still there...other than it is a TV show. Also, the Simpsons in Spanish.

Who are you listening to right now?
I am listening to Pandora. I have many channels on Pandora: I switch between the Amy Winehouse channel to the Electronica-Downtempo channel. As far as jazz goes, I really like Joshua Redman, he is a great saxophone player and has been a big inspiration for me. And of course Coltrane, Dexter Gordon.

What fictional character do you identify with?
Besides Homer Simpson? ...What's the guys name from Avatar?

Music - Joshua James "Build Me This"

Joshua James’ album “Build Me This” is fantastic; it’s no wonder Paste Magazine gave it 92 out of 100 stars. It’s got emotion, energy, passion and great lyrics. The mix of James’ vibrant vocals with the use of piano, guitar and harmonica create a crisp, emotional folk album that is reminiscent of classic folk singers of the 1960s. James’ passion for his music can be heard- and felt- on each track of the album, and listeners can easily tell he means each and every word he sings.

This is actually the first Joshua James album that I have listened to. I don’t really know what took me so long to get on board, but I think it’s safe to say that now I’m hooked. And you can be sure that I’m going to go back to the beginning and listen to each of James’ albums and give them the proper attention they deserve.

Favorite tracks: “Coal War” and “Wilted Daisies”

Music - Introducing Ali Milner

The week before the Sundance Film Festival this year, an independent music festival was held in Park City from Jan.14-20. Over 50 musicians from five different countries came to play at the festival. One such musician was Ali Milner, a singer/songwriter and keyboardist who came down from her home in Vancouver, Canada with her drummer and bassist to play at the festival.

Milner mixes jazz, pop, R&B and reggae into a sound that is completely her own, and sings with a beautiful, soulful voice that reminds me of early jazz performers from decades long since past. She sings of love and life, something that isn’t surprising given she’s 19 years old.
Milner recently released her sophomore album, “I Dare You,” which is a 13-song collection of tunes that capture beautifully the sound of this up-and-coming star. Her songs remind me of a mix between Norah Jones and Sara Bareilles.

Milner put on a wonderful performance at the music festival, brightening up the dimly lit venue and putting smiles on everyone’s faces. She is one of the most unique acts I have discovered recently and I think she is definitely worth a listen for music lovers of any genre.
Oh, and did I mention that she is one of the nicest and most down-to-earth musicians I have met in a while?

You can download her single “Crystal Clear” for free on her MySpace and her albums are available on both Amazon and iTunes.
