Sidenote - Get a slice

Over here at 21st & Ivy, we've been thinking about what we're thankful for - living in America, our freedoms, our family and our friends - and pie. Yeah, we've been thinking a lot about pie. We're thankful for pie. And we're thankful that we have the freedom to have as many slices as we want this Thanksgiving. One slice of Pumpkin, one of Apple, one of Razzleberry....(make that two of Razzleberry). We are blessed. Let's not forget to give thanks.
Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

Music - Shark Speed's "Sea Sick Music"

If you still haven’t heard local band Shark Speed’s debut album “Sea Sick Music,” it’s not too late. But you may want to hurry, seeing that the indie-rock group is about to release its follow up EP within the next few months.

Shark Speed released “Sea Sick Music” in January to a nearly sold out crowd at Velour, and the album has remained on my iPods’ most-played playlist ever since.

Talking to the band several times, they say the album has mistakes that any band would have on its first release. As a listener and fan however, I think the album is flawless.

The album’s 10 tracks are rock driven, catchy and filled with enough dance hooks to get any crowd moving. The lyrics speak of love, loss and overcoming obstacles.

What really draws me to this band, besides singer Thayne Fagg’s unique vocals and the occasional use of the trumpet, is the energy the band brings to each show, and the fact that they were able to captured that energy on the album.

I love everything about “Sea Sick Music” and don’t think the band could have done any better its first time around.

Favorite Tracks:
Cast Off Dance Off
Battle Born
Seagulls

Style - Julia Frakes {Profile}

Like Cory Kennedy, or Tavi Gevinson before her, the fashion world has become enamored with yet another underage muse. At only 19 years old, Julia Frakes has been writing for Paper Magazine, front row at fashion shows like Ann Demeulemeester, and taken under the wing of Simon Doonan and The Sartorialist, Scott Schuman. But, enough with the name dropping.

Mix one part Anne of Green Gables, one part ballerina, with two parts Ramona Quimby and you've got the recipe for Julia Frakes. Her playful take on fashion is all about layers, accessories, and bright pops of color, and we are all about her. Keep your eye on this one!

Music - Tegan and Sara

Tegan and Sara are back and better than ever with their latest release “Sainthood.” The album’s got it all: raw emotions, great lyrics, catchy beats and those familiar vocals from everyone’s favorite indie sisters.

Back in high school, I discovered Tegan and Sara’s album “So Jealous” and loved everything about it. The twin sisters have a sound that’s all their own. However, over the past few years, the group kind of got lost in the tracks on my iPod, reoccurring on my playlist only now and again, and they even released an album before “Sainthood” that I haven’t even listened to yet. But for some reason I got really excited when I heard about this release a few weeks ago. And I wasn’t disappointed either.

“Sainthood” is a little heavier than “So Jealous” but still has the same Tegan and Sara feel to it. It’s got a few slower songs, but most of them are fast, upbeat tracks. The first time I heard “Hell,” the album’s first single, I probably listened to it five times in a row.

I highly recommend this album and any of the group’s other releases. I think I may go back and track down “The Con,” released in 2007, and see what I’ve been missing all these years.

Kid Theodore

Kid Theodore will give any idea a go. If one of them comes to practice with a new song, a couple of chords, or a track they want to cover the band will take it and tear it to shreds, potentially turning the idea into something completely different. While at times a tense process, the four of them have been working together to make their music (which has been described as “garage pop”) as good as possible for several years, long enough that competition between them is not an issue. Competition with other performers may be more of one, however, since relocating to LA a couple months ago from Salt Lake. But they're keeping busy, working on making connections, getting ready to release a new album, and then going on tour. The next year should be pretty exciting.

THE SAME SEVEN QUESTIONS FOR KID THEODORE

Who or what inspires you?
Gardner: Ralphs, Josh Garza, the free market
Cole: “Ch-ch-ch-changes...” - David Bowie
Ryan: I think Jon Stewart wins this one
Brandon: Andy Warhol, Quentin Tarantino & Wes Anderson films

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Gardner: Get more chicks
Cole: I would no longer resemble Josh Groban
Ryan: No more allergies please
Brandon: My eyesight is atrocious

What makes you happy?
Gardner: Tunes, pineapple pizza, the blues, netflix
Cole: Shangri-la
Ryan: #1 – Eating, #2 – Ice Cream, #3 – Cartoon dragons that sing
Brandon: Football games, golfing, good movies, special lady friends

What is your greatest fear?
Gardner: Something bad happening to my drums (stolen, fire, etc.)
Cole: Heights or maybe bullets. Actually, just regret
Ryan: I fear nothing
Brandon: American Idol

What makes you laugh?
Gardner: Funny jokes
Cole: Andy Warhol
Ryan: Rubin & Ed
Brandon: The band mates, the brother, awkwardness

Who are you listening to right now?
Gardner: The Beatles, The Secret Machines, Simon & Garfunkel, Alexisonfire, Ryan Adams, Fictionist
Cole: The same as the last 6 years. Tom Petty, The Kinks, Bob Dylan, The Zombies, and The Anniversary
Ryan: Spoon, Bon Iver, The Kinks, Midlake, Ed Harcourt
Brandon: Tom Petty & The H.B.'s

What fictional character do you identify with most?
Gardner: TU CO or Donny
Cole: The Outlaw Josey Wales or Nevada Smith
Ryan: Rubin
Brandon: Hank Moody

Byron Stout

Byron Stout is a local artist and he is as honest as they come.

“You can’t force it. When you try to, people notice.”

His studio is inside a building that you didn’t know existed, sharing the space with other local talent (a band and a seamstress). Looking at his paintings, you get the strong sense that they are real. This isn’t some fake attempt at scenery or landmarks or people. Its real emotion brought to you in oil from an unassuming building.

Describing his own
art, he says, “I’m like a raccoon, I’m attracted to shiny metal objects and I try to steal them before anyone else does. That’s really how I feel when I see some sort of image, I feel like I have to take that image and capture it before anyone else does, like it’s a race.”If you’ve seen his art, you saw it at the Millman Legacy Gallery in Spanish Fork, Velour, Sego Arts Center, F Stop Café, or a number of window galleries in Downtown Provo. He also has a blog that you may have stumbled across, here.

When asked if he had a goal with his art, he responded, “I guess it’s just to not stop now, you know, pray that I can continue making art for as long as I can.”

And he's only 26.

Music - Night Night

As if having a million things on his plate wasn’t enough, The Vibrant Sound front man and co-owner of Northplatte Records McKay Stevens has added one more item to his list of projects – a band simply called, Night Night.

To accomplish this project, Stevens teamed up with Book on Tapeworm’s Scott Shepard a few years ago.

“A long time ago I was obsessed with indie/electronica,” Stevens explained. “I wrote some songs about 4-5 years ago. I hate singing and about a year after I wrote some songs, I met Scott Shepard and heard him sing. I knew that's who I wanted to sing the songs. So I asked him. He listened to the songs and was super stoked.”

Although the band has been around for a while, Night Night recently added a new member, Nate Pyfer of Code Hero, and changed its direction.

Listening to Night Night brings me back a few years and reminds me a little of Hellogoodbye, Death Cab for Cutie and a toned-down version of The Postal Service. The group combines acoustic and electric guitars with synthesizers and beautiful harmonies to create a unique blend of soft, electronic sounds, perfect for drifting off to sleep.

“We have so many influences but most people would probably say we are a little like Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie,” Stevens said. “These are bands I listened to all the time back in the day. You'll hear a little Radiohead in there as well probably.” To listen to the band’s music, visit www.myspace.com/nightnightnight.
